According to an East Lothian Tribunal, it is, and they awarded £7000 compensation for unfair dismissal to an employee dismissed for breaching his Company’s absence procedure.
Don’t be put off though. If you wish to manage absence, either short term or long term absence, the first step is to ensure you have a clear absence procedure which is well communicated and understood by all. Following that, anyone responsible for managing staff needs to understand how to deal with absence and their role and responsibilities in that process.
