Legislation changes from 6th April

Changes to Legislation effective 6th April 08

There have been some new changes to legislation which came into force on the 6th April 08. These are:

Sex Discrimination Act

  •  A person complaining of harassment under the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 is now only required to show that the alleged treatment was connected or associated with sex and not that it took place because the complainant was a woman (or man).

  •  Liability will be imposed on employers for failing to protect employees from harassment by third parties, such as a customer or client.

  •  Women claiming less favourable treatment on the grounds of pregnancy or exercising the right to maternity leave no longer have to compare their treatment to that of a woman who is not pregnant or exercising the right to maternity leave.

The Information and Consultation of Employees Regulations 2004 are extended to apply to employers with 50 employees or more.

Statutory Maternity, Paternity and Adoption Pay increases to £117.18 per week.

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 comes into force, creating a new offence of corporate manslaughter.
